The ACEM Sarawak and Sabah Branch jointly organized a technical tour to China from 3 to 9 November 2024. The purpose of the tour was to study water resource management, power generation, and green technologies in China, with the aim of finding possible solutions to help the State Government resolve the water and electricity shortages in Sabah and Sarawak.
The Sarawak Branch team was led by Branch Chairman Ir. Rudy Zulfika and Immediate Past Chairman Ir. Wong Leong Teck, accompanied by Ir. Basil, Ir. Tnay CH, and Ir. Ts. Jarvis Ling. The Sabah Branch team was led by Branch Chairman Datuk Ir. Chin Shu Ying, joined by Ir. Tang Kok Yon, Ir. Lo Chong Chiun, Ir. Joe Chow, and Ir. Wong Chen Jack.
During the tour, they visited the site of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, which won the FIDIC Award. The project is the world’s largest and longest water transfer project, spanning a total length of 1,432 km. Water flows entirely by gravity and incorporates over 1,800 crossing structures. The design capacity is 265 m³/s, with an annual water transfer volume of 9.5 billion m³. The project was completed in 2014.
The team also visited a solar and wind power generation site in Fuyang District, capable of generating a total of 1,200 MW of electricity.
The technical visit was made possible by the arrangements of Changjiang Institute of Survey, Planning, Design, and Research (CISPDR) Regional Manager Madam Hou Lu, who accompanied the team throughout. The team also visited the Head Office of the CISPDR in Wuhan and held a technical discussion with their Deputy Chairman He Liangzhu and Director General Zhang Xiao Jun, along with a team of 10 engineers and technical staff. CISPDR is a technology-based firm providing services such as surveying, planning, design, consultancy, and EPC contracting. Over 70 years, the company has completed master plans for large rivers and lakes, including the Yangtze River Basin, and contributed to landmark projects like the Three Gorges Project.
