ACEM participated in the Stakeholder Engagement Session on the Implementation of the New Cable Color Code for Electrical Wiring Installations, organized by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, ST) on 4-6 August 2026 at Swiss Garden Hotel & Residence, Genting Highlands. The session aimed to align the implementation of ST Directive No. 11/2026, assess industry readiness ahead of full enforcement on 1 January 2029, and strengthen collaboration between ST and industry stakeholders for the effective implementation of Project CT (Cable Transition).
During the session, ST briefed participants on the new cable color code requirements that align with IEC 60445 standards. Under the new scheme, phase conductors will change from Red-Yellow-Blue to Brown-Black-Grey, while the neutral conductor color will change from Black to Blue. The earth conductor color remains unchanged as Green or Green-Yellow.
A transition period has been established from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028, during which both the existing and new cable color codes may be used for new installations, extensions and modification works. From 1 January 2029 onwards, compliance with the new cable color code will become mandatory for all applicable electrical wiring works. ST also clarified that there is no requirement to replace existing installations that currently use the old color code.
To ensure safety during the transition period, installations containing a mix of old and new cable color codes must be clearly labelled, and warning notices must be displayed at distribution boards where applicable. ST further emphasized the importance of industry awareness, competency development, training programmes and updating technical documentation to facilitate a smooth transition towards full implementation in 2029.
