Course on Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering 2024 On Monday, 9 September 2024, a course on the “Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering” was held at Hotel Armada Petaling Jaya, running from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The event attracted a total of 40 participants, primarily young Civil and Structural Engineers eager to expand their knowledge in this crucial area of engineering. Geotechnical Engineering, a branch of Civil Engineering, focuses on earth materials, including soils, rocks, and underground water, and is vital for various civil engineering projects, as well as disciplines like mining, petroleum, and coastal engineering.
This one-day course emphasized soil mechanics, particularly the interpretation of subsoil properties and their applications in geotechnical design. Key topics included slope stability, slope strengthening measures, embankment stability on soft ground, and ground treatment techniques. The main objective of the course was to equip participants with fundamental knowledge of geotechnical engineering and its practical applications.
The course featured two esteemed speakers: Ir. Dr. Chan Swee Huat, a Professional Engineer with over 27 years of experience in geotechnical works, including foundation analysis, deep excavations, and soil improvement techniques; and Ir. Chen Chean Sin, who has over 20 years of experience in both local and overseas projects, including land reclamation and foundation design. Their expertise provided valuable insights and practical knowledge, significantly enhancing participants’ understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and their applications.
