On December 12, 2024, the ACEM Sabah and IEM Sabah jointly hosted a successful one day workshop titled “Soil Parameters – Interpretation for Design” at Hotel No. 5 in Penampang Kota Kinabalu. The workshop, led by esteemed geotechnical engineer Mr. Michael Dobie, CEng FICE, aimed to empower participants with the critical skills needed to interpret soil parameters accurately and effectively for successful geotechnical designs. The event, which attracted 83 participants, emphasized the need for a critical approach to data gleaned from geotechnical site investigation reports. Mr. Dobie, drawing on his extensive experience, highlighted the importance of going beyond accepting reported data at face value and instead scrutinizing the information for potential inaccuracies or limitations. Through the use of real-world examples, he illustrated various concepts and provided practical insights, enabling participants to understand the nuances of soil parameter interpretation. The workshop ultimately served as a valuable platform for geotechnical professionals in Sabah to enhance their knowledge, improve their analytical skills, and ensure the robustness of their design decisions.
