On February 20, 2025, a webinar titled “ESG Awareness for Consulting Engineers” was held online via Zoom. The session attracted 53 participants and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors in the consulting engineering sector. ESG was no longer just about compliance; it involved understanding the impact of engineering projects on the environment, society, and governance structures. Consulting engineers, who played a key role in designing and implementing infrastructure projects, needed to integrate ESG principles to future-proof their work and contribute positively to their communities.
The webinar covered important aspects of ESG, including how to identify and reduce environmental risks, promote social responsibility, and follow strong governance practices. Environmental topics included managing climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity loss. Social aspects focused on diversity, inclusivity, and human rights within supply chains. Governance factors emphasized executive compensation, succession planning, and shareholder rights. By applying these ESG principles, consulting engineers aligned their work with global sustainability goals, improved their professional reputation, and set an example in an ESG-conscious market.
The session highlighted the critical role of consulting engineers in promoting sustainable engineering practices. By understanding and following ESG principles, they ensured compliance with changing regulations and attracted investors and stakeholders who prioritized sustainability. The webinar provided participants with a clear understanding of the ESG landscape, helping them make informed decisions that balanced financial, social, and environmental priorities. This knowledge was essential for consulting engineers to navigate the complex ESG landscape and contribute to a more sustainable future.
