On 13 January 2025, a webinar titled “FIDIC Contracts Awareness” was held online via Zoom from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon, with 134 participants in attendance. The webinar provided an in-depth exploration of FIDIC contracts, which originated from the Fédération Internationale des Ingénieurs-Conseils (FIDIC), an international organization founded in 1913 in Belgium. FIDIC’s primary aim was to promote the common interests of consulting engineers worldwide and establish a standardized framework for international construction projects. The first FIDIC contract, known as the Red Book, was published in 1957 and became the industry standard for civil engineering projects. Over time, FIDIC expanded its suite of contracts to include the Yellow Book (for design-build projects) in 1963, the Silver Book (for EPC/turnkey projects) in 1999, and other specialized contracts such as the White Book for Consulting Services, Blue Book for Dredging, Emerald Book for Tunnels, and Green Book for Simple Works. The latest editions, published in 2017 and amended in 2022, reflect updates to align with modern industry practices, including enhanced dispute resolution mechanisms and clearer definitions of roles and responsibilities. The webinar was led by Mr. Nam Trung Nguyen from Vietnam, a FIDIC Certified Adjudicator & Trainer, who discussed the origins of FIDIC contracts, their advantages, the various types of contracts, their global traction, examples of clients or countries that predominantly use FIDIC contracts, and the benefits of learning about FIDIC contracts and obtaining certification through FIDIC Credential Ltd. The talk aimed to kick-start Malaysian Engineering Consultancy Practices to undertake global projects.
