Webinar on Solar Energy in Malaysia: Policies, Technical Requirements and What Consulting Engineers Must Know

On 4 February, a webinar led by Ir. Chong Chew Fan focused on solar energy in Malaysia, covering policies and programmes such as the Large-Scale Solar (LSS) programme, Net Energy Metering (NEM), Self-Consumption (SelCo), and directives from the Energy Commission (ST) and Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS). Participants learned about technical standards like MS 1837 and TNB’s Interconnection Facility (IF) guidelines, as well as approval pathways, licensing, and grid interconnection requirements.

The session also highlighted practical challenges for consulting engineers, including project feasibility, land and environmental constraints, utility coordination, EPC and IF-related risks, permitting delays, and evolving expectations on design quality, safety, and compliance, with real project examples and best practices shared.
