Webinar on The use of Passive and Active Initiatives in the Construction of a Green Highrise Office Building

The webinar on the use of passive and active initiatives in the construction of a green high-rise office building was held on 25 March 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Zoom platform. The session was attended by 102 participants. This session aimed to highlight the integrated design approach adopted by stakeholders through various passive and active initiatives in constructing a high-performance building. The focus was on the sustainable and energy-efficient features of Menara Kerja Raya, particularly the Mechanical & Electrical system design and the selection of equipment that significantly contributed to reducing electrical energy consumption. Additionally, the webinar emphasized the importance of an effective operation and maintenance strategy to optimize high-performance building operations and ensure continuous occupant comfort.

The webinar commenced with an introduction to passive and active features of the building. Passive strategies such as natural ventilation, daylight optimization, and thermal insulation were discussed in detail, while active initiatives included the use of high-efficiency HVAC systems, energy-efficient lighting, and smart building management systems. The speaker elaborated on how these elements were integrated to achieve sustainability goals.

Following the introduction, the session covered operation and maintenance strategies and requirements necessary for maintaining the effective performance of the building. It was emphasized that regular maintenance, continuous monitoring of energy consumption, and adoption of smart technologies were key to ensuring long-term sustainability and energy efficiency. Case studies and real-world applications from Menara Kerja Raya were presented to illustrate successful implementation.

The webinar was delivered by Ir. Gopal Narian Kutty, a distinguished mechanical engineer with extensive experience in project design, construction, and management. Holding degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and a Master’s in Construction Project Management from UMIST, Ir. Gopal had served in the Public Works Department of Malaysia for 34 years. He had held key positions such as Senior Director of the Mechanical Engineering Branch and Director of the Environmental and Energy Efficiency Branch of JKR Malaysia. His vast expertise in mechanical design, sustainability construction, conservation, and energy efficiency fields provided valuable insights to the participants

Overall, the webinar successfully provided a comprehensive understanding of how passive and active initiatives could be effectively integrated into the design and operation of green high-rise office buildings. The attendees gained valuable knowledge on the importance of sustainable building practices and strategies for enhancing energy efficiency in modern construction.
