ACEM Webinar Highlights Engineering Innovations Behind Star Residences

ACEM organised the webinar “Star Residences: Engineering Innovation & Construction Challenges” on 23 September 2026 via Zoom. The two-hour technical session attracted 50 participants and focused on the engineering innovations and construction challenges encountered in the development of Star Residences, a mixed-use development with an estimated gross development value (GDV) of RM3 billion near the PETRONAS Twin Towers.

The webinar covered several key engineering solutions adopted for the project, including a full top-down construction methodology for a 5.5-level basement, which accelerated construction by nine months, as well as concrete-infilled API plunged columns used to support significant construction loads during the top-down sequence.

Participants were also introduced to a hybrid pile-rock raft foundation, developed to address differential settlement between Kenny Hill and Limestone formations. The session further explored structural challenges arising from the development’s asymmetrical tower footprints, where advanced lateral modelling and Grade 80 high-strength concrete were applied as part of the engineering solution. Sustainable initiatives and integrated transit connectivity incorporated into the development were also highlighted.

The session gave participants practical insights into high-rise structural engineering, complex basement construction, foundation design, and the application of innovative engineering solutions within a challenging urban environment.

The webinar was presented by Ir. Alvin Ang Cheng Hin, Managing Director of T.Y. Lin International Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, who has 27 years of experience in infrastructure and structural engineering, together with Ir. Chew Mei Ling, Senior Associate at T.Y. Lin International Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, who has more than 20 years of experience in structural engineering and project management.
